PlayStation 2, the best-selling console of all time

The gaming world is celebrating the global launch of Sony’s PlayStation 5 series and Microsoft’s Xbox series this month. The Japanese company will launch new game consoles in several countries on November 12, and will do the same in other parts of the world (including Europe) on November 19. The American rival made its world debut two days ago.

While the world continues to await the arrival of the fifth console in the PlayStation family, one of its predecessors, the PlayStation 2, will always remain the best-selling console. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in March, the console has sold more than 157 million units since its launch.

Japanese companies have also found that various PlayStation models dominate all the top positions in the ranking of the most commercially successful consoles. Therefore, the first
generations of PlayStation are of the 5 most purchased board game consoles in the world.

With the exception of Sony, only Nintendo with the famous Wii has sold more than 100 million consoles.


Officially, the PlayStation 2 launched in Japan on March 2000, but not in other regions until a few months later. Since the leak, the industry expected Sony to fully develop the successor to the PS1 released in late 199.

This device was an immediate commercial success. .. To date, it remains the best-selling console in history with more than 160 million units.
